The companies that get this right do one thing differently. They make deliberate decisions about communication infrastructure before they hire, not after.
Choose your communication stack first and commit to it
The biggest productivity killer in remote teams is tool sprawl. When some people use Slack, others use email, and managers default to impromptu Zoom calls, information gets siloed and nothing is where it's supposed to be. Pick a primary communication tool, a project management platform, and a video conferencing solution. Then enforce them consistently. The specific tools matter less than the consistency with which your team uses them.
For most sales teams, Slack handles real time communication, a lightweight tool like Asana or Notion handles project and task visibility, and Zoom or Teams handles calls. That's enough for most organizations.
Build accountability into the structure, not the surveillance
The temptation with remote teams is to over-monitor. More check-ins, more reporting, more visibility dashboards. That approach signals distrust and burns out good people. The better model is clear expectations, defined output metrics, and a consistent review rhythm. Your reps should know exactly what good looks like and how it's being measured. Weekly one on ones, a pipeline review cadence, and clear activity targets do more for accountability than any monitoring tool.
Invest in onboarding more than you think you need to
Remote onboarding is harder than in-person onboarding. New hires can't absorb culture by osmosis or ask a quick question by tapping someone on the shoulder. Everything needs to be documented, deliberate, and over-communicated. The companies that get remote right treat the first 90 days as a high touch investment, not a self-guided tour.
